Dementia Connection Model.

The Dementia Connection Model© was created by Dr. Jennifer Stelter while working alongside those with dementia and their caregivers and staff for over a decade. It's the first cognitive-behavioral framework in dementia care that improves the quality of life for the individual with dementia and deepens the connection between that person and their caregiver.

I am right now reading your awesome “The Busy Caregiver’s Guide to Advanced Alzheimer Disease” and can’t put it down. The retrogenesis progression that my husband has and is going through is certainly confirmed throughout your book! Through trial and error I have been able to implement most of the things that you’ve created in your Dementia Connection Model toolbox! Confirmation that it works.

In this workbook style guide, she shares this new model designed to help dementia caregivers understand, cope, and handle some of the most challenging symptoms associated with the disease, while encouraging and reinforcing independence and quality of life for their loved ones or residents.

IPPY Award Winner of Health/Medicine/Nutrition

  • Often a first-time encounter, a loved one’s dementia diagnosis begins a journey with few guideposts. Dr. Stelter’s book should be an important “first read” for anyone eager to get educated on how best to go forward. Its unique approach is also a worthy read for anyone who is looking for best practice. I recommend it highly.

    • Dan Cohen, Co-creator of ‘Alive Inside’ documentary and Music & Memory

  • As someone deeply passionate about improving the lives of people living with cognitive change - and their caregivers, this book would be in the top three I would recommend to my family and friends. Helping someone through this journey is probably one of the hardest thing that can happen to a family or in any close contact situation. This book makes it easier which improves the experience for everyone, including the person living with cognitive change. Amazon Reviews Charles De Vilmorin

    • Charles de Vilmorin. CEO of Linked Senior

  • As a psychologist, I look forward to recommending this resource to my patients. Dr. Stelter's book is chocked full of very helpful information and evidenced-based strategies to aid with communication problems, mobility difficulties, memory deficits and other issues that caregiver's often do not know how to manage effectively. The content is user friendly including worksheets to aid with tracking and monitoring progress. If you think you might need this book, you likely do!

    • Dr. Beverly Pedroche, Clinical Psychologist

  • Bringing together three theories of dementia connection, Dr. Stelter creates a unique care model for persons with dementia.

    • Andrea Nelson, RN, MSN, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

  • A great, easy-to-read book. By providing practical anecdotes, Dr. Stelter makes what can be very academic theories available to the layperson. I absolutely love the idea of laying the content out as a workbook, allowing families to apply the exercises to real-life situations.

    • Rachelle L. Blough, CTRS, CDP, CADDCT, Memory Care Consultant

  • As a psychologist who had the privilege of previously working under Dr. Stelter, and experienced how knowledgeable and caring she is, I found her book an excellent source of information and advice that addresses all day-to-day concerns for those living with dementia. This resource helps to explain the disease process and provides strategies for Alzheimer’s patients and those caring for them. The strategies are accessible and Dr. Stelter provides helpful templates to document strategies used and outcomes; bridging information to practice for loved ones providing care. I’ve found the information useful for those I work with in long term care who not only have Alzheimer’s disease but other conditions that cause cognitive limitations that have effects similar to Alzheimer’s disease. I recommend this book to anyone who loves or works with those with this terrible condition.

    • Shellie, Psychologist

  • Jennifer, your book is such a comprehensive look at Alzheimer’s Disease and it’s possible affects on the whole person. I appreciate that at the end of each chapter you included “Putting it Into Action”, and gave the “how” on interventions and redirection, as well as charts to journal about loved one’s actions and behaviors. A great read for home caregivers and those on in memory care communities. Thank You!

    • Angela F.

  • This easy to read book helps you better understand how to care for someone who is going through the process of retrogenesis. There are worksheets throughout the book that help you put helpful techniques into action, learning and recording data along the way. Dr. Stelter also includes real-world examples in her book, bringing to life common scenarios for someone living with Alzheimer disease and explaining how habilitation and sensory-based stimulation can help increase your loved ones or patients quality of life. I highly recommend this book!

    • Amira

  • The book does an excellent job at helping you understand Alzheimer’s and then giving you different strategies to help you with the challenges one can expect. I recommend this for people who are just starting to learn about dementia or if you’re an expert. You will definitely benefit from learning this new model.

    • Jane

  • This book was written to help equip an individual who may be caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Having worked with Dr. Stelter for years, I knew this book would be EXCEPTIONAL. She walks on this journey with you providing practical tools and strategies to help care for your loved one who is dealing with this terrible disease. She has poured her heart and soul into this book. I highly recommend this book!

    • Danette Temple, RN, MSN

  • Having worked with Dr. Stelter before I knew this book would be very helpful to me, my family and friends. I grabbed a copy right away for future reference. The organization is very user friendly for both professionals and families on the difficult Alzheimer learning curve.

    • BKWR

  • My grandmother unfortunately passed away with some form of dementia, and I wish I had this book earlier! The knowledge I learned from this was so helpful, and I love the workbook style of the book it is so practical to see what works and what does not. This book really opened my eyes to non-pharmacological approaches, and I wish the methods Dr. Stelter discusses were a standard across the world, but especially the US. More people need to read this, it changed the way I think about long term care, and I understand so much more about the disease now. I recommend this to anyone but especially those who are new to the disease and want to learn more about what they can do to help their loved one. Thank you Dr. Stelter for writing the perfect book.
